Can't Put It in the Dumpster? Here's Where It Goes.
We can't take hazardous materials - but that doesn't mean you're stuck. Wisconsin has solid options for every category below. We've done the homework so you don't have to.
TVs, computers, monitors, and other electronics contain lead and mercury and cannot go in landfills in Wisconsin.
Car batteries, lithium-ion (laptop/phone), and rechargeable batteries all require special disposal.
Liquid paint is hazardous. Completely dry latex paint cans may go in the dumpster - but anything still liquid cannot.
Motor oil, antifreeze, transmission fluid, and brake fluid are all regulated - never dump them down a drain.
Fluorescent bulbs contain mercury. They're illegal to throw in the trash in Wisconsin.
Cleaning chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, pool chemicals, and solvents require proper disposal.
Small propane cylinders (camping/grilling size) are pressurized and cannot go in a dumpster or curbside recycling.
Tires are banned from Wisconsin landfills. They must be recycled through a registered tire recycler.
The Wisconsin DNR's Household Hazardous Waste program has answers for nearly everything.
